Trying to work out what God is saying can be complicated for any Christian. For LGBTIQ Christians, though, there can be another layer to untangle.

You may have spent years hearing other people tell you exactly what God thinks about you, what He expects from you and what you need to change before you can live faithfully. After a while, all those voices can become difficult to separate.

Is that conviction you are feeling, or something somebody taught you to fear? Does the guilt come from God, or from years of being told you should feel guilty? When a decision brings peace, can you trust that peace, or have you learned to distrust yourself whenever your experience does not match what someone else says Christianity requires?

There are no instant answers to questions like these, that is precisely why discernment matters.

Discernment Is More Than Looking for a Sign

We sometimes talk about hearing God’s voice as though Christians receive perfectly clear instructions and simply need enough faith to follow them. Most people’s spiritual lives are considerably messier.

Discernment is the process of listening, reflecting, questioning and paying attention. It involves prayer and Scripture, but also wisdom, reason, community and the fruit something produces in your life. Rather than asking you to switch off your mind, discernment asks you to engage with your faith more deeply.

That can feel unfamiliar if you grew up in a Christian environment where obedience meant accepting what an authority figure said without question. Yet thoughtful engagement with faith is not rebellion. Christianity has always involved people wrestling with difficult questions, reconsidering what they understand and trying to recognise where God is leading.

Discernment gives you permission to take that process seriously.

When Other People’s Voices Sound Like God’s

One of the hardest parts of discernment is recognising how easily human voices can acquire divine authority.

Perhaps a pastor told you that God could never bless an LGBTIQ relationship. Maybe your parents believed accepting your identity meant abandoning your faith. You might have heard sermons warning that your feelings cannot be trusted, or Christians confidently explaining what God thinks about people like you.

Those messages can settle deeply. Eventually, you may hear them inside your own thoughts even when the people who originally spoke them are nowhere nearby. Fear can begin to sound like conviction simply because you have heard it for so long.

Discernment creates room to ask where those messages came from. That does not mean automatically rejecting everything you were taught. Instead, you can examine it. Does this belief reflect the character of Christ? What does Scripture actually say when you consider context rather than isolated verses? What kind of fruit has this teaching produced?

Does it draw you towards God, honesty and love, or leave you frightened, ashamed and increasingly disconnected from Him? Those questions can help separate inherited fear from a faith you have genuinely examined for yourself.

Prayer Can Become a Conversation Again

Prayer plays an important part in discernment, but it involves far more than repeatedly asking God for instructions and anxiously waiting for an answer. Instead, prayer creates space for an honest relationship with God, where listening, questioning, reflection and trust can develop over time.

You can come to God honestly when you feel confused, including when you desperately want a particular answer and worry that your own desires might influence you. At the same time, prayer gives you space to bring your anger, hope, attraction, relationships and uncertainty into the conversation, including things you may feel afraid to say aloud in church.

Most importantly, you do not need to approach God with everything already understood or know what He wants before you begin.

In fact, clarity can develop through the process itself. As you pray, reflect and give yourself time, you may begin to recognise which fears belong to old wounds, which concerns deserve attention and which direction leads towards greater honesty, love and peace.

Sometimes discernment begins with a better question. Rather than only asking, “What am I supposed to do?” you might ask, “What is leading me towards life, love and truth?”

Scripture Deserves More Than a Handful of Verses

For many LGBTIQ Christians, biblical discernment has been reduced to a small collection of passages. Someone quotes them, gives you an interpretation and presents the conversation as finished. Scripture deserves more thoughtful engagement than that.

Reading with discernment means considering context, language and the wider biblical story. It means asking what a passage reveals about God and how an interpretation aligns with the life and teachings of Jesus. Love, mercy, justice and grace belong in that conversation too.

None of this requires pretending difficult passages do not exist. Quite the opposite. You can take Scripture seriously enough to wrestle with it instead of assuming the first interpretation you received must be the only faithful one.

Reading through the character of Christ can also change the tone of the conversation. Fear no longer gets to decide what every passage means before you have even opened the Bible. Curiosity has room to return.

Your Mind Belongs in Your Faith

God gave you the capacity to think, so using it does not make you a difficult Christian. You are allowed to notice contradictions. You can ask whether an argument makes sense, examine evidence and recognise when somebody’s conclusion does not follow naturally from what they are saying. Critical thinking does not have to compete with faith.

In fact, reason can help you recognise when fear is doing the thinking for you. Perhaps you were taught that accepting yourself would inevitably take you away from God, but your experience has been the opposite. Maybe becoming more honest has deepened your prayer life, strengthened your relationships and allowed you to serve others more freely.

Discernment allows you to notice that reality rather than dismissing it because it does not fit an expected outcome. Faith and thought can sit at the same table.

Your Experience Matters Too

Personal experience cannot answer every theological question, but ignoring it creates problems of its own. What happens in people’s actual lives matters.

If a teaching repeatedly produces shame, isolation and fear, that deserves attention. Likewise, if greater honesty leads someone towards compassion, peace, healthy relationships and a deeper connection with God, those outcomes are worth noticing.

Discernment asks us to pay attention to outcome. That does not mean anything that feels good automatically comes from God, or anything difficult must be wrong. Growth can be uncomfortable, and love sometimes asks difficult things of us. The question is deeper than immediate comfort.

What is this producing over time? Are you becoming more loving, honest, compassionate and grounded? Does your faith help you treat yourself and other people with greater dignity? Are you moving towards integrity or learning to live a divided life?

Your lived experience becomes one part of the conversation rather than something you have to ignore.

Other People Can Help Without Taking Over

Discernment is personal, but it does not need to become solitary. Healthy Christian community can help us recognise things we miss ourselves. A trusted friend may ask a question you had not considered.

Another LGBTIQ Christian might share an experience that helps you understand your own. A pastor, theologian or spiritual mentor can introduce context or perspectives that open up a difficult passage in a new way. The important distinction is between guidance and control.

Healthy community does not demand agreement as the price of belonging. Nor does it insist that another person knows God’s will for your life better than you could possibly discern it yourself. Instead, good community creates room for conversation, accountability and different perspectives while respecting your responsibility to think, pray and make decisions.

Sometimes the people who help us hear God most clearly are not those who give us answers. They are the ones who give us enough room to listen.

Discernment Does Not Always Give You Certainty

This part can be frustrating. You can pray, read, think, talk to wise people and still finish with some uncertainty. Discernment does not guarantee that every question ends with a perfectly clear answer. What it can develop is maturity.

Over time, you become better at recognising what aligns with love and the character of Christ. Fear becomes easier to identify when it appears. You can hold complicated questions without feeling that your entire faith will collapse if you do not resolve them immediately.

That is a different kind of confidence. It does not come from knowing everything. Instead, it grows from trusting your relationship with God enough to keep listening, learning and moving forward.

You Don’t Have to Switch Yourself Off to Hear God

Perhaps this is the most important thing to remember about discernment: you do not have to become passive in order to become faithful.

Scripture consistently supports a faith that thinks, seeks wisdom, pays attention and grows. Throughout the biblical story, people ask questions, wrestle with God, reconsider assumptions and learn through experience.

For LGBTIQ Christians, reclaiming discernment can therefore be especially meaningful. It allows you to examine messages you may have inherited about yourself without assuming that questioning them means questioning God. Prayer, Scripture, reason, community and lived experience can all become part of a deeper conversation.

Gradually, faith becomes less about obeying the loudest voice in the room and more about developing a relationship with God that you actively inhabit.

You may still have questions. You will probably change your mind about some things along the way. There may even be times when you wish God would simply make everything unmistakably obvious.

But perhaps mature faith was never supposed to mean switching off your mind and waiting for instructions.

Discernment invites you to bring your whole self into your relationship with God: your faith and your questions, your mind and your experience, your uncertainty and your hope. And somewhere within that honest conversation, God’s voice may become easier to recognise.

“Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.” – 1 Thessalonians 5:21

Discernment can help LGBTIQ Christians separate God’s voice from fear, question inherited beliefs and build a thoughtful, grounded relationship with God.

[12

post-2219","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-blog

<meta property="og:title" content="Discernment for LGBTIQ Christians: Is That God or Fear?
