{"id":55,"date":"2026-01-16T08:19:50","date_gmt":"2026-01-16T08:19:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rainbowchristianhub.org\/?p=55"},"modified":"2026-08-04T12:31:56","modified_gmt":"2026-08-04T12:31:56","slug":"myth-vs-gospel-what-christianity-really-says-to-lgbtiq-people","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rainbowchristianhub.org\/index.php\/2026\/01\/16\/myth-vs-gospel-what-christianity-really-says-to-lgbtiq-people\/","title":{"rendered":"Myth vs Gospel: What Christianity Really Says to LGBTIQ People"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For many LGBTIQ+ Christians, a long-held myth is that faith requires a choice between belonging and belief, between love and obedience, or between God and being true to yourself. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over time, repeated claims have hardened into &#8220;truths&#8221; that are rarely questioned, even when they cause deep harm. This post gently but clearly explores ten of the most common myths through the lens of the Gospel, looking beyond tradition, fear and control to the heart of Christian faith as revealed in Scripture and the life of Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Myth 1: \u201cYou can be LGBTIQ, but you must remain celibate to be faithful.\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Gospel:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Celibacy is a calling for some, not a command for an entire group of people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Scripture never imposes lifelong celibacy as a condition of faithfulness. Paul is explicit that celibacy is a gift, given to some and not to others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cI wish that all were as I myself am. But each has a particular gift from God, one having one kind and another a different kind.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1 Corinthians 7:7<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Requiring celibacy only of LGBTIQ Christians goes beyond biblical teaching and places a burden Jesus never placed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Myth 2: \u201cSame-sex attraction isn\u2019t sinful, but acting on it is.\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Gospel:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus teaches that actions are discerned by their fruit, not by abstract rules disconnected from lived reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cYou will know them by their fruits.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Matthew 7:16<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout scripture, sexual harm is condemned when it involves exploitation, coercion, abuse, or betrayal. Mutual, loving, faithful relationships that bear fruits of love, joy, and faithfulness are never named as sinful by Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Myth 3: \u201cThe Bible is clear that homosexuality is a sin.\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Gospel:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Bible never uses the concept of sexual orientation. The category of \u201chomosexuality\u201d as an identity did not exist when scripture was written.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cAll scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2 Timothy 3:16<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Scripture requires interpretation, context, and humility. Claiming clarity where the text itself is silent imports modern assumptions into ancient writings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Myth 4: \u201cFollowing Jesus means denying core parts of yourself.\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Gospel:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus calls people into fullness of life, not self-erasure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cI came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>John 10:10<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Transformation in the Gospel is about becoming more whole, more loving, and more alive, not suppressing identity in order to be acceptable to God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Myth 5: \u201cLGBTIQ Christians are welcome, but only under strict conditions.\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Gospel:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Belonging in Christ is rooted in grace, not compliance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cWhile we were still sinners, Christ died for us.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Romans 5:8<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus welcomes people before they change, before they understand, and before religious authorities approve. Conditional welcome is not the model of the Gospel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Myth 6: \u201cSuffering proves obedience.\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Gospel:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus explicitly condemns teachings that burden people and confuse suffering with holiness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cThey tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on the shoulders of others.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Matthew 23:4<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While suffering exists in life, God does not require unnecessary suffering as evidence of faithfulness. Harm is never a spiritual requirement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Myth 7: \u201cNon-affirming teaching is loving, even if it hurts.\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Gospel:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Love is measured not only by intention, but by fruit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cLove is patient; love is kind\u2026 It does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1 Corinthians 13:4\u20136<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Teachings that repeatedly produce shame, despair, isolation, and mental health harm must be honestly evaluated against the biblical definition of love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Myth 8: \u201cThe Church has always taught this, so it must be right.\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Gospel:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus warns against confusing human tradition with divine command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cYou abandon the commandment of God and hold to human tradition.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Mark 7:8<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Church has changed its understanding on many issues once defended with scripture. Faithfulness includes reform when tradition fails to reflect love and justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Myth 9: \u201cLGBTIQ Christians should submit quietly and not question.\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Gospel:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Discernment is a biblical practice, not rebellion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cTest everything; hold fast to what is good.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1 Thessalonians 5:21<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus consistently challenges religious authority and affirms the voices of those most affected by religious rules. Questioning harmful teaching is part of faithful discipleship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Myth 10: \u201cYou must choose between your faith and who you are.\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Gospel:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Gospel never asks people to choose between love and belonging, between faith and self.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cSo if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2 Corinthians 5:17<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">New creation does not mean erasure. It means becoming fully alive in love, truth, and relationship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Heart Of The Gospel<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the centre of Christianity is not fear, exclusion, or enforced loneliness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is Christ, who measures faith by love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cBy this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>John 13:35<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If love, joy, peace, faithfulness, and wholeness are present, then God is already at work. The Gospel is not about making yourself smaller to be acceptable.
