Jesus explicitly warns against teachings that burden people without offering life or healing.

In Depth

Why This Question Is Being Asked

Many LGBTIQ Christians do not begin by questioning non-affirming theology. More often, they begin by trying to follow it faithfully. Years may be spent praying for change, suppressing feelings, avoiding relationships, or wrestling with parts of themselves that seem impossible to separate from their faith.

For some, that journey does not lead to peace, freedom, or deeper spiritual growth. Instead, it can result in anxiety, shame, isolation, depression, and a fractured sense of self. The struggle is not usually the result of rejecting God, but of trying desperately to remain faithful while carrying a burden that never seems to lift.

As these experiences accumulate across countless lives, an important question naturally emerges. If a teaching consistently produces suffering for so many sincere believers, what does that reveal about the teaching itself? Asking that question is not an act of rebellion. It is part of the discernment that Jesus encourages when he tells his followers to pay attention to the fruit a teaching produces.

The Power of What We Believe About Ourselves

Theology is never just an intellectual exercise. What people believe about God often shapes what they believe about themselves, their worth, and their place in the world.

When someone repeatedly hears that a core part of who they are is disordered, broken, or unacceptable, those messages rarely remain abstract ideas. Over time, they can become deeply internalised, influencing how a person views both themselves and their relationship with God.

Instead of experiencing themselves as loved and valued, some begin to carry the belief that they are fundamentally flawed, that God’s acceptance is uncertain, or that belonging must be earned through constant self-denial. Their authentic self can come to feel like a problem that needs fixing rather than a person worthy of care and dignity.

The emotional and spiritual consequences of these beliefs can be profound. Shame often takes root where confidence should grow, and fear can begin to overshadow the trust and freedom that the Gospel seeks to cultivate.

The Burden of Internal Conflict

Human beings are not designed to live indefinitely in conflict with themselves. When an essential part of a person’s identity is treated as something to hide, deny, or fear, a painful internal tension often develops.

One part of the person longs for honesty and authenticity. Another fears rejection, exclusion, or the loss of belonging. Carrying that conflict day after day can be exhausting. Anxiety becomes chronic, shame takes root, and a constant state of vigilance can emerge as people try to manage how much of themselves is safe to reveal.

Rather than leading towards wholeness, this experience often creates fragmentation. Emotional exhaustion, spiritual distress, and a growing sense of disconnection can follow when a person feels forced to choose between authenticity and acceptance. The result is not greater integration, but an ongoing struggle to hold together parts of themselves that were never meant to be at war.

Why Shame Is Different From Conviction

Shame and conviction are often confused within religious settings, yet they operate in very different ways. Conviction points towards growth by drawing attention to actions, behaviours, or choices that may need to change. Its purpose is restoration, helping people move towards a healthier relationship with God and others.

Shame works differently. Rather than addressing what a person has done, it attacks who they are. Instead of saying, “Something needs attention,” it communicates the message, “Something is wrong with you.”

Healthy spiritual growth may involve conviction from time to time. Persistent messages that leave people feeling fundamentally defective, unworthy, or beyond acceptance are more likely to produce shame. The distinction matters because conviction can lead to healing and transformation, while shame often creates fear, self-rejection, and a diminished sense of worth. Rarely does it produce the flourishing that the Gospel seeks to nurture.

What Happens When Belonging Becomes Conditional

Every person needs belonging. Connection, acceptance, and community are not luxuries but fundamental parts of being human. Most people thrive when they know they are valued, welcomed, and able to participate fully in the lives of others.

Problems arise when belonging depends on suppressing or rejecting part of oneself. In those situations, people can feel trapped between the desire for authenticity and the fear of losing acceptance. Honesty begins to feel risky, while silence becomes a way of protecting relationships, community, or personal safety.

The emotional cost of living this way can be significant. Mental health often suffers when people believe they must constantly edit themselves in order to remain connected. A community may appear welcoming on the surface, yet still communicate that acceptance has limits if certain truths are spoken aloud.

Healthy belonging creates space for honesty. Rather than forcing people to choose between authenticity and connection, it allows them to be known as they are and valued for who they are.

Looking at the Outcomes

Jesus repeatedly teaches that outcomes matters. A theological claim should not be evaluated solely by its age, popularity, or the confidence with which it is defended. The impact it has on people’s lives is important too.

Part of Christian discernment involves asking what a teaching produces over time. Does it nurture hope or deepen despair? Does it encourage trust in God or create fear and anxiety? Does it help people move towards wholeness, or leave them feeling fragmented and disconnected? Does it lead towards life, healing, and growth?

These questions do not replace scripture, nor do they override it. Rather, they help believers consider how scripture is being interpreted and applied in practice. Jesus’ emphasis on fruit reminds Christians that the outcomes of a teaching can reveal whether it is reflecting the life-giving character of the Gospel.

The Difference Between a Cross & a Burden

Some people argue that the suffering caused by non-affirming theology is simply part of carrying one’s cross. The New Testament, however, makes an important distinction between suffering that arises from living faithfully and burdens imposed by religious systems.

Jesus repeatedly challenges leaders who place heavy loads on others while offering little compassion, support, or relief. His concern is not only whether people are carrying burdens, but whether those burdens are necessary and life-giving in the first place.

Not every burden is God-given. Some emerge from human interpretations, cultural expectations, or structures that have developed over time. Discernment involves learning to recognise the difference. A central question is whether a burden draws people towards greater faith, hope, and freedom, or whether it leaves them weighed down by fear, shame, and despair.

The Example of Jesus

Throughout the Gospels, Jesus consistently moves people towards healing, dignity, and restoration. His ministry is marked by relieving burdens, welcoming those who have been excluded, restoring people who have been shamed, and challenging religious practices that cause harm rather than life.

Hope is offered to those who feel trapped. Compassion is extended to those pushed to the margins. Again and again, Jesus responds to suffering by drawing people closer rather than pushing them further away.

Very rarely does he increase shame. More often, he confronts the systems and assumptions that create it. This pattern raises important questions whenever a theology repeatedly leaves people wounded, fearful, or burdened. If the ministry of Jesus points towards restoration, then teachings that consistently produce the opposite deserve careful and honest examination.

What Healthy Theology Produces

Healthy theology does not eliminate every struggle. Life remains complex, challenges still exist, and spiritual growth continues to require honesty, humility, and self-reflection.

Even so, the overall direction of a healthy faith is important. Over time, it tends to nurture hope rather than despair, connection rather than isolation, trust rather than fear, and wholeness rather than fragmentation. Love gradually becomes stronger than shame, creating space for people to grow without losing sight of their dignity.

These outcomes do not guarantee an easy life, but they align closely with the vision of flourishing found throughout the Gospel. Again and again, the Christian story points towards restoration, deeper relationship, and abundant life rather than chronic hopelessness or spiritual exhaustion.

Scripture

Heavy Burdens Are Not Praised

Matthew 23:4

“They tie up heavy, cumbersome loads and put them on other people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them.”

Jesus directly criticises religious leaders who create burdens without helping people carry them. The concern is not simply about rules but about the harm those rules can cause.

Christ Offers Rest

Matthew 11:28–30

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

Rather than increasing suffering, Jesus invites weary people into rest, relief, and restoration.

Life in All Its Fullness

John 10:10

“I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”

The mission of Christ is described in terms of abundant life. Teachings that consistently diminish wellbeing deserve careful examination in light of this purpose.

No Condemnation in Christ

Romans 8:1

“Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”

The Gospel begins with grace rather than condemnation. Persistent messages of worthlessness stand in tension with this promise.

Perfect Love Drives Out Fear

1 John 4:18

“There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear…”

Fear may accompany difficult circumstances, but it is not the ultimate goal of Christian faith. Love remains central.

The Fruit of the Spirit

Galatians 5:22–23

“The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.”

These qualities provide a picture of healthy spiritual growth. Chronic shame and despair are notably absent from the list.

In Summary

Many LGBTIQ Christians describe a painful experience: teachings intended to draw them closer to God instead leaving them carrying shame, fear, isolation, and emotional distress. What began as an attempt to be faithful can gradually become a source of deep spiritual and psychological struggle.

Scripture does not ignore suffering, but neither does it celebrate unnecessary burdens. Throughout the life and ministry of Jesus, a consistent pattern emerges. The weary are offered rest. Those pushed to the margins are welcomed back into community. People carrying shame are restored to dignity, while hope repeatedly takes precedence over despair.

This does not mean every difficult emotion proves a teaching is wrong. Growth, change, and self-reflection can be challenging. Yet persistent patterns of shame, self-rejection, and mental health harm deserve serious attention rather than dismissal.

Christian theology has long recognised the importance of fruit. When a teaching repeatedly produces despair instead of life, discernment invites believers to ask whether the burden comes from God or from human interpretation. The overall movement of the Gospel is towards healing, wholeness, and abundant life. Any theology should be examined in light of that reality.

Leave a Reply Cancel reply

Your email address will not be published. Required fields are marked *

Comment *

Name *

Email *

Website

Save my name, email, and website in this browser for the next time I comment.

Why does non-affirming theology often lead to shame and mental health harm?
